It has been just over a week since the earthquake struck Haiti, leaving in its wake massive devastation and a nation in desperate need of the world's assistance. With half of Haiti's population being children, UNICEF's role in this relief effort is critical.
As someone who, for the last 30 years, has typically been in the field for UNICEF in emergencies like this, it is humbling to watch the commitment of Canadians supporting Haiti. By the end of today, UNICEF Canada will have already sent over $2 million, donated by Canadians, to our emergency response efforts in Haiti.
The disaster in Haiti warrants extraordinary measures by all of us. And so we've decided to take the step of sharing highlights from UN emergency situation reports so you have the latest information from the ground.
These reports provide extraordinary, first-hand detail to show you some of the work being done to save and protect the thousands of children at risk.
In Haiti – and humanitarian emergencies around the world – UNICEF has the key international leadership role in critical relief efforts including water and sanitation, nutrition, child protection and education. As the lead agency in these response areas, we are coordinating the activities of other humanitarian organizations, and have committed to raise over US$128 million globally to support this urgent response.
